Sridhar

By Uncategorized

Holding more than walls.

Once, Sridhar would lie on the hard streets of Bengaluru next to his wife and two children. Drunk and malnourished, Sridhar and Devamma dreamed of the day they could lie down in a warm bed and give their three and eight-year-olds a world they hadn’t known before. One with running water, a roof, and steady, consistent food.

Now, Sridhar and Devamma smile soberly from their new home, the Home of Hope. A shelter that was born out of the response to save those living in severe poverty. It was in this space that Sridhar and Devamma were able to get the medical and healthcare help they needed to start building a better life for their kids. One that goes beyond the necessities of food and shelter.

Currently? Dreams are no longer distant as Sridhar and his family are held up by more than four walls.

Water that gives Life.

Lydia is a loving mother who lives in Olkutoto village, located in Kenya. She was married to a man who was abusive towards her family and often threatened and intimidated her. One day, he packed up and left her with the responsibility of being the sole provider for her family.

Alone and scared, Lydia wanted nothing more than for her children to have a good life, where they could hope for a future. Determined, she worked hard to bring in income for her family, and before she got connected with The Hope Venture, she would travel an entire day to get water for her children, though it wasn’t clean. She knew it wasn’t ideal, but it was the only option they had.

That’s when we stepped in with our partners. Our Kenya Water and Sanitation Project provides clean water for Lydia’s family through a filtration system. Her family now has access to clean water, which isn’t just a basic necessity; it’s a lifeline.

It doesn’t just give them healthier lives; it reduces their expenses, so Lydia doesn’t have to spend an entire day walking for clean water; she can spend time being a mom and earning a living.

Lydia now has hopes of building a permanent house so her children can have a better place to sleep. She wants her children to grow up with an education, and she hopes to help other villages around her have clean water and sanitation. She can already see the ways that the water project has transformed her life, and can do the same for others.

Pain into Purpose.

Aisha lives with her grandmother in Central Uganda. She is a strong-willed mother who cares for her community and approaches life with optimism. But Aisha’s life hasn’t always been this way.

When she was just a young girl, her mother and father tragically passed away, leaving her in the hands of her grandmother. Despite her grandmother’s efforts to provide a good future for her, their income remained tight, and she struggled to cover their basic needs.

One day, when Aisha was running an errand, she was suddenly attacked and sexually abused. This horrible crime led her to become pregnant. She was terrified because in her culture, she knew that this was incredibly shameful for unmarried women.

Aisha felt desperate, like her life was falling apart. She already had little income, and now had to think about a baby boy she was going to bring into the world—how could she do it alone?

Aisha hopes to eventually send her son to school, so he can also learn skills and dream for the future. She also has her own dreams of opening up a tailoring shop and teaching other young mothers the same skill she now has.

Around this time, she got in contact with our partners at Wakisa, who help young moms learn vocational skills. Through our partnership with Wakisa, Aisha was able to learn how to sew clothes, and eventually began to provide for her grandmother and her son.

Even though her life has been difficult, she has been able to turn unspeakable pain into purpose.

Empowerment through Education.

Angelique is a young, hard-working woman who lives in Rwanda. She learned hard work from her parents, who fought to provide for her and her siblings growing up. Although her parents are separated, she admires their work ethic and how they always wanted to give her a better life.

Since their income was unstable, Angelique had a challenging time getting proper materials for college, such as textbooks and writing utensils. She did very well academically, so she was able to get scholarships that covered the tuition, but accommodation to be able to attend school was a luxury she just couldn’t afford.

That’s when she got connected with us and became a recipient of our Acts4Rwanda College Scholarship. This scholarship provided her with a place to stay during school, writing materials, and food while at college. After she is finished with her education, she will be able to secure a stable job, so she can help her family have a better life.

This scholarship doesn’t just empower her to do well in her studies; it impacts her entire family and gives her the freedom to dream new dreams.

Trusting God to Provide.

Beulah is a determined student who lives in India with her parents and her older brother. There is constant financial instability in Beulah’s family as her dad works as a freelancer, painting houses, working in the fields, or doing construction or cleaning. Despite the unstable income, the family puts their trust in God, asking him to provide for their needs, just as they see him do for others.

Beulah loved going to school, but her parents struggled to afford the fees to send her to ninth grade. With Beulah studying for the board exams that were going to be conducted by the State Government, the school put more pressure on her parents to pay her education fees by the end of the month, or she’d be forced to be removed. Beulah studied late into the night.

She was stressed about the exams, but even more worried about whether she’d be permitted to take them. Seeing her dismay, her parents encouraged her to pray and ask God for help.

During this time, The Hope Venture learned about her family and was able to step in through their India Scholarships program, which is given to students to help empower them in their education.

As a result, she was able to place first in her class, and has gone on to win awards for her academic achievements. Beluah and her parents thank God for his provision for their family through The Hope Venture’s program.

Beluah now has dreams of becoming a doctor and helping people in her community find health and strength.

Hope in the Face of Illness.

Mr. Chaitan Hansda is sixty-four years old and lives with leprosy in India, a condition that has impacted every part of his life. When Chaitan was a child, he received the diagnosis that left his parents in financial hardship, struggling to afford his medical bills. Chaitan stopped seeing his friends, playing outside, and being a kid. His identity was shattered.

Leprosy wasn’t just a disease that impacted his health; it robbed him of his childhood.

One day, feeling trapped and alone, Chaitan decided to end his life. His parents and neighbors were thankfully able to save him from that life-altering decision, rallying the community around him.

Through prayer and love, and with the help of medical treatments, Chaitan’s condition improved, leading him to eventually get married and have children. Finally, it seemed like he could begin to live the life that was once stolen from him.

But with the overwhelming family demands, Chaitan was unable to continue his medical treatments, and his family was slowly unraveling. Consequently, his illness returned, not only touching Chaitan’s life again, but also his wife’s.

Determined not to be a victim of his illness, Chaitan arrived at The Hope Venture’s Leprosy Care center. He’s been able to receive free medication for ongoing treatments. He is now able to stand and walk with decreased pain. Although his life still isn’t perfect, he is finally able to have hope for the future.

Carrying Dreams.

Retroe is a young girl who lives in Kenya, and hopes of growing up and becoming a doctor. One reason she wants to be a doctor is that she has a disability that makes her unable to walk, and she gets around in a wheelchair.

Retroe is motivated to do well in school, to achieve her dreams, and to make her family proud. Her family believes in her too, and they help carry her to school every day, making sure she’s one step closer to her goals.

Her family is a recipient of our Goats Project. Goats are resilient and can survive off the dry brush in Kenya, and they also supply families with milk for nourishment.

The goat that Retroe’s family received ended up being pregnant, so they were blessed with not just one but two goats!

This provided huge relief for her family, because they were immediately able to sell the extra goat’s milk and use that money for Retroe’s education.

Although it is still difficult to transport Retroe to school, her family is thankful for the assistance through The Hope Venture, which allows her to continue her education and pursue her dreams.

Elizabeth

New Life Ahead.

Elizabeth, resides in Mathare, which is a slum located in Kenya. In Mathare, buildings are packed together, with little space for privacy. A few months before she became a recipient of our Mathare Medical Camp Project, she became extremely sick to the point where she had to stop working as a cleaner. This also meant she lost the little income she had as she was faced with high blood pressure and ulcers. At risk for infection and facing excruciating pain daily, she grew more desperate for help.

Since medical care is so expensive in Kenya, the Mathare Medical Camp Project seeks to provide relief to people experiencing life-threatening illnesses through free healthcare services. Elizabeth heard about the project and was eager to see if it was real. By the time Elizabeth arrived at the medical clinic, she found many people in line waiting to get assistance as well.

The line was so long, and she barely stood upright; she was so sick, but she knew she had to get help, and soon. Noticing her struggling, our partner at the medical camp quickly brought her to the front of the line. She was immediately seen by a nurse and a doctor and was able to get medication so she could feel better. Now, she is in stable condition, thanks to the Mathare Medical Camp Project, and can go back to work. Elizabeth’s story is a reminder of how healing and compassion can bring relief and hope for a better life.

Relief in the Face of Hardship.

Hariharan lives in a small mountain village in India. His father works in the fields near the village and earns a daily wage. His family’s financial situation is poor, making it difficult for his sisters to find spouses. Although they have a roof over their head, the family’s biggest concern is where their next meal will come from.

Nearly five years ago, His mother, Pushparan, developed gangrene in her leg, which quickly spread to her other leg. As a result, she had to have both of them amputated. She is more vulnerable since the family lives in a remote, isolated village; they can’t just take a trip to the hospital whenever they want.

Pushparan’s disability has taken a toll on the family, and Hariharan found himself discouraged by the hardship they were facing. In the past, there had been days when there wasn’t food in the house, and the family was forced to go to bed hungry.

That’s when The Hope Venture stepped in, and through their feeding center in India and the Jawadhu Hills Project, Hariharan was able to gain education and a consistent meal in the evenings. He was even able to share food with his family and play a part in easing the burden of economic hardship.

Because of The Hope Venture, his parents feel immensely thankful, and are hopeful for the future Hariharan is now able to have because of their work. His dream is to be educated and to have a permanent job, so he can finally have a stable income to help him provide for his family.

Montoi

Simple Needs Met, a New Life Envisioned.

Montoi is a young married mother. She and her husband, David, reside in Oletukat, Kenya. Together they raise their two young boys and their daughter. After David’s parents had passed away, they were forced to evict their home by his uncles. His uncles wanted to take their land, livestock, and inheritance. David and Montoi were immensely angry with their family members, and felt deeply betrayed by their selfish motivation. However, they had no choice. Ever since then, Montoi and David have struggled with immense poverty. Added to that, they also had to endure a drought which caused them to lose all their remaining livestock due to diseases and lack of water.

Now they live in a small and humble home, working to raise their children up in a life that isn’t limited to their situation in poverty. The family was even having to relieve themselves in the bushes by their home, leaving them vulnerable to typhoid and other deadly water-borne diseases. In their old house, Montoi had the space and time to help care for the children, but now she has to spend most of the day going to a nearby river just to get them water.

As a result, her young children are left alone vulnerable with no one to care for them during the hours she is walking to get water. Montoi desperately wished that her children could be left in the care of someone trustworthy, but they couldn’t afford to pay for anyone to come watch them, and they were much too young to walk the distance with her to get water. Just as it seemed that things would never get better, the family received word that they were going to receive a goat from The Hope Venture’s Goat Project! Goats are very resilient animals, so even while families like Montoi and David lost their livestock and income, goats can continue to help generate a source of income and nutrition.

The impact didn’t stop there! Because The Hope Venture’s partners had a relationship with the family, they arranged to help get the family a working toilet so they wouldn’t have to continue using the nearby bushes filled with diseases. As a result, this has minimized flies around the house and reduced the likelihood that the family would become ill from disease. The nearby neighbors have even been benefiting from the toilet, helping to reduce the amount of human waste that people in the community are exposed to. Not only this, but they are also able to access clean water provided by The Hope Venture and its partners, so Montoi no longer has to spend long hours away from her children gathering water.

With these benefits, the family is better set up and empowered to rebuild their life that was stolen from them. The children can laugh and play and be kids knowing that their most basic needs aren’t something they need to worry about. Montoi’s outlook on life has also greatly improved. With the support and assistance she and her family received she is confident that they won’t suffer from that immense of poverty again. Montoi and David want to focus on utilizing the gifts they’ve been entrusted with to help generate income on their farm, rebuilding a business that they lost. They know that other challenges will arise, but they are able to face them knowing that they have not only a good herd of goats to sustain them, but a community to walk alongside them.
