Rakshita

By Project Stories

A Place to Return.

Leaving at a moment’s notice, Rakshitha’s father, Harish, might receive a call that his transportation company needs him to haul quarry. Similarly, Rakshitha’s mother may need to tend to a new home, often working for various neighbors as a hired hand.

To Rakshitha, wages disappear, days blur, but the smell of rice and lentils is a constant.

Before the sun sinks and fades into the Indian sky, Rakshitha counts on her local feeding center to provide her with a hot meal.

And because she eats, she stays.

And it is here that Rakshitha returns. A space to share dinner with friends, unwind after school, and learn new skills at the center’s computer training program.

This program allows students to practice their knowledge on computers and gain valuable hands-on learning for free. What used to be low scores in computer class at school have now become a 96% on her final exam.

Rakshitha has also been a proud recipient of the annual backpack program over the past four years, setting her up for a successful year.

Rakshitha has gained not only skills she’s learned, but also a community she can count on.

Sridhar

Holding more than walls.

Once, Sridhar would lie on the hard streets of Bengaluru next to his wife and two children. Drunk and malnourished, Sridhar and Devamma dreamed of the day they could lie down in a warm bed and give their three and eight-year-olds a world they hadn’t known before. One with running water, a roof, and steady, consistent food.

Now, Sridhar and Devamma smile soberly from their new home, the Home of Hope. A shelter that was born out of the response to save those living in severe poverty. It was in this space that Sridhar and Devamma were able to get the medical and healthcare help they needed to start building a better life for their kids. One that goes beyond the necessities of food and shelter.

Currently? Dreams are no longer distant as Sridhar and his family are held up by more than four walls.

Mariam

The Yes She Didn’t Expect.

“Would I, could I soar? Will we fly high above the clouds together someday, little love? Even if just for a bit?”

The voice inside Mariam’s head wondered as she shifted her gaze to her baby girl, kicking her feet in the air with a giggle.

As she prepares for another feeding, Mariam considers this new great love of hers and humbly gives her best afternoon effort to keep her babe happy.

Checking the time, she is reminded that just a few months ago, she was in class with her closest girlfriend in math class. Mariam tries to shoo the memory away as quickly as it comes.

“Will I go back? Could I go back? Who will watch my child?”

Mariam swats away the thought as she considers what it might be like to graduate from high school, or fly her first airplane, or prepare a financial statement for a client. As she ponders what it must be like to be a pilot or an accountant, her baby kicks, and she is greatly reminded of her newest title: mom.

But what came next in the following weeks was unexpected.

An announcement that Mariam had received the Youth For Christ Uganda’s Scholarship for Teen Moms.

As Mariam held her baby in her arms, she thought, “Maybe you and I will soar after all.”

Mariam’s jaw dropped slightly as she burst into a wide smile, baring her straight white teeth.

Lakshmi

Sewing a New Story.

For 15 years, Lakshmi has wanted to learn to tailor as a way to earn an income and send her two children to school. With one in 7th grade and the other in 10th grade, Lakshmi and her husband have struggled to meet education fees while actively climbing out of debt.

In 365 days, Lakshmi not only learned how to sew, but she has also built a profitable and sought-after business.

Thanks to the South India Vocational Training project, Lakshmi received free instruction that taught her valuable skills, which helped her find success.

So much so that she earned 5,000 rupees (about $55) in profit, and made 12,000 – 13,000 rupees (between $130-$140) total before expenses. That meant that Lakshmi was able to pay back debt, and she is now able to float all of her expenses independently.

When reflecting on her story, Lakshmi said, “We need to continue this everywhere.”

Because we rise when we lift others.

Water that gives Life.

Lydia is a loving mother who lives in Olkutoto village, located in Kenya. She was married to a man who was abusive towards her family and often threatened and intimidated her. One day, he packed up and left her with the responsibility of being the sole provider for her family.

Alone and scared, Lydia wanted nothing more than for her children to have a good life, where they could hope for a future. Determined, she worked hard to bring in income for her family, and before she got connected with The Hope Venture, she would travel an entire day to get water for her children, though it wasn’t clean. She knew it wasn’t ideal, but it was the only option they had.

That’s when we stepped in with our partners. Our Kenya Water and Sanitation Project provides clean water for Lydia’s family through a filtration system. Her family now has access to clean water, which isn’t just a basic necessity; it’s a lifeline.

It doesn’t just give them healthier lives; it reduces their expenses, so Lydia doesn’t have to spend an entire day walking for clean water; she can spend time being a mom and earning a living.

Lydia now has hopes of building a permanent house so her children can have a better place to sleep. She wants her children to grow up with an education, and she hopes to help other villages around her have clean water and sanitation. She can already see the ways that the water project has transformed her life, and can do the same for others.

Pain into Purpose.

Aisha lives with her grandmother in Central Uganda. She is a strong-willed mother who cares for her community and approaches life with optimism. But Aisha’s life hasn’t always been this way.

When she was just a young girl, her mother and father tragically passed away, leaving her in the hands of her grandmother. Despite her grandmother’s efforts to provide a good future for her, their income remained tight, and she struggled to cover their basic needs.

One day, when Aisha was running an errand, she was suddenly attacked and sexually abused. This horrible crime led her to become pregnant. She was terrified because in her culture, she knew that this was incredibly shameful for unmarried women.

Aisha felt desperate, like her life was falling apart. She already had little income, and now had to think about a baby boy she was going to bring into the world—how could she do it alone?

Aisha hopes to eventually send her son to school, so he can also learn skills and dream for the future. She also has her own dreams of opening up a tailoring shop and teaching other young mothers the same skill she now has.

Around this time, she got in contact with our partners at Wakisa, who help young moms learn vocational skills. Through our partnership with Wakisa, Aisha was able to learn how to sew clothes, and eventually began to provide for her grandmother and her son.

Even though her life has been difficult, she has been able to turn unspeakable pain into purpose.

Angelique

Empowerment through Education.

Angelique is a young, hard-working woman who lives in Rwanda. She learned hard work from her parents, who fought to provide for her and her siblings growing up. Although her parents are separated, she admires their work ethic and how they always wanted to give her a better life.

Since their income was unstable, Angelique had a challenging time getting proper materials for college, such as textbooks and writing utensils. She did very well academically, so she was able to get scholarships that covered the tuition, but accommodation to be able to attend school was a luxury she just couldn’t afford.

That’s when she got connected with us and became a recipient of our Acts4Rwanda College Scholarship. This scholarship provided her with a place to stay during school, writing materials, and food while at college. After she is finished with her education, she will be able to secure a stable job, so she can help her family have a better life.

This scholarship doesn’t just empower her to do well in her studies; it impacts her entire family and gives her the freedom to dream new dreams.

Trusting God to Provide.

Beulah is a determined student who lives in India with her parents and her older brother. There is constant financial instability in Beulah’s family as her dad works as a freelancer, painting houses, working in the fields, or doing construction or cleaning. Despite the unstable income, the family puts their trust in God, asking him to provide for their needs, just as they see him do for others.

Beulah loved going to school, but her parents struggled to afford the fees to send her to ninth grade. With Beulah studying for the board exams that were going to be conducted by the State Government, the school put more pressure on her parents to pay her education fees by the end of the month, or she’d be forced to be removed. Beulah studied late into the night.

She was stressed about the exams, but even more worried about whether she’d be permitted to take them. Seeing her dismay, her parents encouraged her to pray and ask God for help.

During this time, The Hope Venture learned about her family and was able to step in through their India Scholarships program, which is given to students to help empower them in their education.

As a result, she was able to place first in her class, and has gone on to win awards for her academic achievements. Beluah and her parents thank God for his provision for their family through The Hope Venture’s program.

Beluah now has dreams of becoming a doctor and helping people in her community find health and strength.

Hope in the Face of Illness.

Mr. Chaitan Hansda is sixty-four years old and lives with leprosy in India, a condition that has impacted every part of his life. When Chaitan was a child, he received the diagnosis that left his parents in financial hardship, struggling to afford his medical bills. Chaitan stopped seeing his friends, playing outside, and being a kid. His identity was shattered.

Leprosy wasn’t just a disease that impacted his health; it robbed him of his childhood.

One day, feeling trapped and alone, Chaitan decided to end his life. His parents and neighbors were thankfully able to save him from that life-altering decision, rallying the community around him.

Through prayer and love, and with the help of medical treatments, Chaitan’s condition improved, leading him to eventually get married and have children. Finally, it seemed like he could begin to live the life that was once stolen from him.

But with the overwhelming family demands, Chaitan was unable to continue his medical treatments, and his family was slowly unraveling. Consequently, his illness returned, not only touching Chaitan’s life again, but also his wife’s.

Determined not to be a victim of his illness, Chaitan arrived at The Hope Venture’s Leprosy Care center. He’s been able to receive free medication for ongoing treatments. He is now able to stand and walk with decreased pain. Although his life still isn’t perfect, he is finally able to have hope for the future.

Retroe

Carrying Dreams.

Retroe is a young girl who lives in Kenya, and hopes of growing up and becoming a doctor. One reason she wants to be a doctor is that she has a disability that makes her unable to walk, and she gets around in a wheelchair.

Retroe is motivated to do well in school, to achieve her dreams, and to make her family proud. Her family believes in her too, and they help carry her to school every day, making sure she’s one step closer to her goals.

Her family is a recipient of our Goats Project. Goats are resilient and can survive off the dry brush in Kenya, and they also supply families with milk for nourishment.

The goat that Retroe’s family received ended up being pregnant, so they were blessed with not just one but two goats!

This provided huge relief for her family, because they were immediately able to sell the extra goat’s milk and use that money for Retroe’s education.

Although it is still difficult to transport Retroe to school, her family is thankful for the assistance through The Hope Venture, which allows her to continue her education and pursue her dreams.
